BC Election – What, No STV?

bc-stv1I am so bummed. Not so much that the Liberals are in power again, although that too is a bummer. I’m shocked that people are so entrenched in the way things are, that they can’t see that a single-transferable-vote system would result in more people at the table and help us to work together to  find solutions that work for all of society. It would help us get away from the swinging policies of what here is a two-party government. We spend so much time undoing the work of others because of different ideals and values, rather than coming up with a solution that works for everyone from the get go. It saddens me that ideals of the Green Party such as:

Get over-run with arguments about right and wrong, who’s side are you on, they suck we rock pandering. Are we as an entire society that emotionally immature?

It shouldn’t be about who wins the power, it should be about who is at the table working with everyone else at the table. We know that would make for a more fair and better representation, but because we can’t explain the new system in a soundbite, we dismiss the STV with “Is that sexually transmitted disease?” and a “Well, I don’t understand it.” I challenge you to explain the existing system and why it works so well.

Political apathy, like parental apathy, is so frustrating.

I don’t think that it is that people are so entrenched in the way things are. I think they are confused. People do not understand the STV and are not convinced that it is the best option. I think the referendum question should be reworded. It should have asked if people wanted to keep the first past the post or to have some form of electoral reform. Once people have voted for some form of electoral reform, we could have commitees set up to bring us 3 or 4 options. Once we have 3 or 4 well thought out options we could vote for the best form of electoral reform.

Remember it is all an illusion. The powers that be like it the way it is.

    Peace

Thanks for that thoughts Mark. I love the idea of ensuring a more democratic process.

If the idea was too complicated, though, doesn’t having more options make it more so? An unbiased committee of 160 people has already done extensive research and found that the STV ensures more of our votes have influence on the outcome. I’m suggesting that if it is too complicated to understand, look simply at the reasons it is considered the best alternative. If democracy is what we truly want, then we want STV because it will get a lot more people voting.”..[D]o not expect stability in politics and government until votes are treated equally and fairly.” Citizen’s Assembly
